How do you come near to God?
Some people I’m sure have a marvellous morning routine that is studious and practical. Each day at 5:45 they roll out of bed and hit the desk with Bible in hand and a song in their heart. Me? Not so much. I used to have a strict routine but as the boys have grown my ability to retain the structure I once knew has gone with it. I’ve found myself needing to do tangible things. Different things that draw me close to God, closer to my faith. Lately I’ve been lighting three candles. Three different, distinct candles. As I light them I give thanks to God, I embrace Jesus and I wonder at the Holy Spirit.
After these candles are lit life takes over. I do get my Bible time and embrace my morning coffee but it’s interlaced now with lunches and care taking. It’s not as quiet as it once was nor is it always as intense or as long but it is my time, my own time when I read and reflect and come closer to God. It is needed time and for a long time it worked as it once but it needed more, it needed the candles.
The candles help me to focus. The candles help me to remember to draw near.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you…”
How will you come near?
