Random Thought Thursday: May 17 Edition

It’s been a while!  Here’s a little of what I’ve been up to:

First of all reading the Bible in the style of a novel instead of through study guides or daily reading sheets has been fascinating.  Little parts I’ve always glossed over have more meaning.  Running into old friends {like Elijah} has been incredibly interesting as I’ve just recently read all that came before so it’s fresh and vivid and his message is quite powerful.  I’m really glad I began this exercise as it has brought the scriptures to life in a new way for me.

Stemming from all this reading I have to say I’m thrilled to not be a prophet back in the day.  Being a prophet was hard.  Ministry is hard enough but having to call an entire people to account would be a nightmare.  Glad I’m just Becky at this moment in time.

Life at home has been pretty quiet.  X. has tons of new words and is always on the go.  I’ve been experimenting in the kitchen and embracing all the fresh spring produce I can find.  I cashed in my air miles for a new waffle iron so I anticipate a  a great waffle adventure is in my future.

I’ve been quiet over the last week as I’ve been taking some time to mull things over and debate what it is God wants from me.  After receiving some wise counsel last night after Presbytery I think I have a better idea on what I should be doing.  I’m grateful for the advice and prayer of friends.  It’s so helpful!

Well that’s it for me but that’s not all.  I’d love to know what’s going on with you.

How have you been?

Random Thought Thursday: April 12th Edition

  1. Does anyone know why sitcom characters don’t remove their shoes when they enter their homes?  This bothers me.
  2. My husband and I were thinking of going to Vegas in the next month or so but I’m a little nervous as we’ve never left X. before so now we’re wondering if we should stick a little closer to home.  I’m excited to have time with him but this a new experience for me.  Any advice or ideas on what we should do?
  3. X. has decided that he no longer needs naps.  Mamma still needs them though.  His nap was when I got everything done around the house.  I’ve found this to be a challenge and will definitely require a change in strategy on my part.
  4. My email box was out of control this week.  I’ve almost conquered it but have undoubtedly offended many as I was not a quick with the replies as I should have been.  Terribly sorry about that.
  5. Just copy of the Eat Clean Diet Vegetarian and am super excited!  The recipes look great and I’m going to pick out a few to try this weekend.

Random Thought Thursday: March 22nd Edition

As I am sure you are aware I am loving this weather!  I’ve gone for walks everyday down by the lake and have been treated to this gorgeous sight:

How ridiculous is this for March?  So amazing and exactly what I needed.  I love the sunshine!

I’m still reading and reflecting on Jesus but I won’t bore you with the details this week.  Let’s just say that I’m thinking a lot.  I’m feeling inspired and slightly unsure.  I am quite certain that God is working in my life and I am rather glad I chose to engage in Lent this way.

You must eat this today….

I had some mushrooms that I needed to use and was wanting a quick supper and this was the result.  A garlic mushroom mozarella sandwich.  MMMMM.

Throw 16 oz of sliced mushrooms into a larger stainless steal pot with some white wine and a little water and cook down.  When the mushrooms are almost cooked at a pinch of salt, 1 tsp of thyme and 1/2 tsp rubbed sage.  Stir well.  Cook the mushrooms down until there are brown bits on the bottom of the pan (but don’t burn).  Add a little extra water and cook down again.  Once cooked remove from heat.

Have 12 slices of bread ready.  I used a garlic loaf (as in garlic baked right into the bread) and it was delicious.  If you can’t find a loaf like this rub some roasted garlic on the inside (where the cheese will go) and you should get a similar flavor.

Butter (or earth balance butter in my case) one side of each piece.  Flip over and load up six of the slices with mozzarella (I used Daiya mozzarella for a dairy free sandwich).  Throw some mushrooms on top.  Sprinkle the mushrooms with a little more cheese to help it stick together.  Place the opposite piece on top.

Grill these bad boys until brown.   You’re going to have some white wine left over so pour yourself a glass and enjoy it with your sandwich.

My son is obsessed with trains.  This means we spend a lot of time with Thomas and Dinosaur Train.  I stupidly bought the soundtrack to Thomas because I knew he’d like it and now I have to listen to the song Roll Call over and over again.  It gets stuck in my head and I cannot get it out.  If you’re wondering what I am talking about here’s a video from the series:

Fringe is new this week!  HOORAY!  I’ve been waiting for a new episode.  I’ll be in my basement tomorrow night at 9 pm watching if anyone needs to find me.

Random Thought Thursday: March 15th Edition

Thought 1:

I have to admit that my Lent project has taken over my life.

So far I’ve read:
Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis
Crazy Love by Francis Chan
Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell
Malachi {along with other Bible readings that I forgot to keep track of}
Sex God by Rob Bell
Jesus wants to save Christians by Rob Bell and Don Golden

and I’m in the middle of
They Like Jesus but not the Church by Dan Kimball
Erasing Hell by Francis Chan
Crave by Chris Tomlinson

I also watched the web conference today at preachbettersermons.com and it was brilliant.  I came out of it with 8 pages of notes, tons of good ideas and a good sense for where I’d like to be {preaching wise} within the next year.

Because of all this activity you could say it’s rather intense here.  I’ve got thoughts flowing constantly and am talking my husband’s ear off with all of my ideas.  I am truly enjoying it though and haven’t felt this ‘on track’ spiritually since before my son was born.  It’s been a kind of reawakening of sorts.  This part of me which lay dormant has been reborn and I’m sure it’s scaring a few people!

Thought 2:

I have completely neglected the cooking/random family side of the blog.  Does anyone miss it?  I blame thought 1.

Thought 3:

The lake is beautiful and it feels more like May than March.  I love this weather!  I absolutely adore it.  I hope that spring is here to stay.

Thought 4:

I have an obsession with Fringe.  It has to end.  I am watching the whole series over again and seeing all of the foreshadowing that took place before I realized fully what was happening.  It’s been interesting to watch again but I do need some new television.  Does anyone have any recommendations for good shows I can get into?

Thought 5:

I created a bracket for March Madness this year as the golf course we golf at has a fun league.  I stink already.  I’ve had 3 teams go out in the first round and my friends are killing me.  Basketball is not my sport at all but I had hoped for a better showing than this!

Random Thought Thursday: March 1 Edition

  1. I’m bored of Pinterest already.  Two weeks in and I really don’t care.  Everyone said I would love it and I should give it a chance.  I do think people’s boards are pretty and I’ve found some nice ideas but overall just not something I spend time on.  I feel like I’m missing something as so many people love it but I am lukewarm.
  2. I adore Fringe.  I was annoyed at the beginning of the season but now that they are going back to their roots I find I love it once more.  If you haven’t seen it, watch it!  It’s intelligent and you don’t find a lot of intelligence on television anymore.
  3. I’m really enjoying the reading I’ve been doing for Lent.  A lot of my books deal with change and the church in the future so I find that’s where I’m drifting right now.  I would love some suggestions for other spiritual reading if you have any.
  4. I used to love the Oscars.  I would watch for the fashions and root for certain people.  This year as I sat down to watch I was shocked when I realized that I haven’t seen one movie that was nominated.  This was a tragedy and really makes me realize how much my husband and I need to prioritize date night!
  5. I killed my orchid that I received for Christmas from Gran.  It was beautiful until it wasn’t.  Apparently I gave it a fungus by overwatering. Sadly by the time I realized what was happening to it, it had perished. Luckily I still have the orchid my husband got me from Valentine’s day.

Random Thought Thursday: February 16th Edition

  1. I received a lovely orchid from my husband for Valentine’s Day.  This now means I have two living plants in my home.  This is a momentous occasion.
  2. The CBC Radio App has changed my life.  No longer do I have to drag my little beat up cd/radio player with a broken antenna all over the house trying to find a signal.  Now I can carry my iPad with me and it’s crystal clear radio coverage all day.  I feel like an adult again as I’m able to listen to current events and my favorite show ‘Q’.
  3. My husband is in love with Jeremy Lin.  “Linsanity” has taken over our lives.  It’s kind of like Tim Tebow all over again.  I’ll write more on this later…
  4. Thomas the Tank Engine has taken over my life.  There are stuffed trains, metal trains, wooden trains, colouring books, stickers and more moving in slowly and infiltrating everything.  My son loves him.
  5. I may have given in and joined Pinterest this week.  I’m not obsessed with it but I do look at the boards a little each day and seek inspiration.  I don’t think it will become an addiction and I’m glad about that but I am enjoying it.

Random Thought Thursday: February 9th Edition

  1. I have big plans for this weekend that include applesauce and peanut butter cookies.  Usually this means we relax do almost nothing but a girl can dream!
  2. X. has two teeth left to come in.  Once they arrive I’m throwing a party.  It’s been difficult for X. in the last little while and I look forward to happier days for him.  I hope it happens soon!
  3. I wonder if Gisele’s comments about the Patriots receivers will be the Yoko Ono moment of Tom Brady’s career.  Is it all downhill from here?  Time will tell.  I’m so glad I don’t have people following me around with cameras to catch all the stupid things I say.  Celebrity isn’t a good thing all the time.
  4. I haven’t gotten into Pinterest.  Everyone else seems to love it and spend loads of time pinning things.  I’m not really sure if it’s a good idea. Do I need another way to waste time on the internet?  Is it really as good as everyone says?
  5. It’s getting close to Lent.  I’ve got my pancakes lined up and am ready for the pancake party but am trying to figure out what to do for Lent itself. Should I have a blog meditation series? Should we do the Daniel fast then? Should I pick a book and read it?  I want to do something to prepare for Easter and am just tossing around a few ideas.  If you have any suggestions let me know.  I’d love to hear what you’re doing or would like to do {alone or as a community}

Random Thought Thursday: December 8th Edition

  1. Life here has been incredibly busy but fun.  We’ve been to parades and dinners.  We’ve sat around the tree, gabbed with friends and just enjoyed the season.  While I wouldn’t mind a day at home I really treasure this time of year when everyone comes together.
  2. My baking has been a bust so far.  It’s been good, don’t get me wrong but I haven’t found that perfect cookie/square to complete the holiday round up.  I hope this week will be better on the baking front.
  3. I think I might be killing my blender with smoothies.  It makes a horrible groaning sound and I’m afraid it will explode any day now.  I’m sure there will be sales after Christmas if it does die so I’m not terribly worried.  It’s given me 5 solid years and I’ve somewhat abused it.
  4. Football is brutal!  I’m so close and yet so far away from the playoffs. It comes down to this weekend, and these match-ups.  It feels wrong to hope others will lose and yet I cannot deny that I long for a spot in the championship.  Wish me luck!
  5. I have no Christmas gifts purchased.  I am working on some of the homemade gifts I have planned.  Never before have I been this far behind!  This weekend I must catch up and get organized.  Wish me luck!

Enjoy this week and Merry Christmas!  I hope you’re enjoying the season.

Random Thought Thursday: December 1st Edition

  1. I cannot believe it’s December already!  It feels like the year has flown by.  We have our first holiday party on the weekend, a Santa Clause parade to attend and an Art Walk.  It would seem that the season is off to a great {and busy} start!
  2. My mission for this week is to create a perfect peppermint sugar cookie.   I’m not sure whether to incorporate the mint right into the cookie or just layer it on top with the icing.  Decisions, decisions!  I’ll be sure to post the recipe if it turns out.
  3. Today I’m collecting food for the food bank {as part of our Advent Project}.  I started collecting a few things on the weekend but will do the big push today.  While I’m out grocery shopping I think I’ll hunt for some necessary staples that are on sale to supplement what I’ve got here.  If you’re participating in the project I’d love to hear how you’re doing today!  Please leave a comment and let me know.  :)
  4. I think that The Smurfs looks like the dumbest movie ever and I watched The Smurfs religiously as a child.  I am sure I’ll have to watch it as some point but I have to wonder are there no new ideas in Hollywood?  Are we to expect a Gummi Bears movie next? How would that even work?
  5. I am currently in sixth place in my Fantasy Football league.  I possess the third highest points of all players.  My team is good on paper yet manages to fail me more than 50% of the time.  This week is the point at which I must win in order to have a chance at a place in the playoffs {competition is that tight!}.  Wish me luck!

Bonus: For those of you who may have watched Gummi Bears and now have the theme song running through your head thanks to random thought 4, I thought I would attach the opening credits for you so you can relive your youth.
